The Phil Cay Music Story
Let's begin at the beginning
Phil Cay born December 19/1935 in Jacksonville Florida
I will be telling my own personal story here and a fellow musician Jim Trucks will be writing some of the stories here.
Jim and I are writing a book about all the entertainers we have know since 1950 and maybe even a little earlier.
I can't remember when I wasn't singing, or playing the piano, so many years have past and I'm still at it.
My father Raymond Cay was a singer and sang mostly in
churches all my life.
Joining my father was my two sisters Bonnie, Beverly and myself singing in the churches right along with dad.
Mom and Dad payed for me to take piano lessons, but the teacher told them that I would never be able to play because I just wouldn't read the sheet music. I would ask the teacher to play the song and then once I heard it I would play it by ear. That's the way I started playing, by ear. Don't ask me how. I really don't know how I had that talent it just came to me as a gift.
One day while working at a store after I finished my army hitch, I met a nice lady, Christine Bennett and her husband, and invited them over to our house for dinner. I sat down at the piano and played an old song and sang it for them and then I played two songs that I had written.
Her husband said that he played guitar a little and wanted to know if they could come back and he and I could play some together. His name was Earl Thornton. We go together the next time and Christine brought her little 14 year old daughter, Charlotte, eventually to be my wife!! More on that later.
